Dr. A. K. Banerji is a legendary figure in India's medical community, particularly in the field of neurosurgery. His contributions are nothing short of remarkable, as he introduced micro neurosurgery to the country, established national standards for neurosurgical education and assessment, and advanced numerous subspecialties. He is held in high regard and is widely recognized for his significant impact on the field of neurosurgery.
In addition to his other groundbreaking treatments, he also devised a methodical approach to operating on aneurysms, peripheral nerves, the pharynx, and tumors in the pineal area.
Prof. Banerji established the Neurosurgery Department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences from scratch after joining the institution in 1965. Soon after, in 1988, he was promoted to head AIIMS's Neurosciences Centre, a post he maintained until his retirement in 1995. Dr. A. K. Banerji has been honored for his contributions to neurosurgery by being named an Emeritus Professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
The Vidyasagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMHANS), New Delhi, was one of the first private mental health and neurosciences centers in the nation after his successful time at AIIMS. Until 2007, Dr. Banerji served as the Director of VIMHANS; since then, he has been on staff at Apollo Hospital, where he is now an Emeritus Consultant. He is one of the few people who have two different orations commemorated by bearing his name.
