About Doctor

Dr. Rakesh Kapoor is a distinguished Urologist & Kidney Transplant Surgeon in Delhi NCR. He also serves as the Director of the Division of Urology and Kidney Transplant with 32 years of experience.

He was awarded the Hewitt Gold Medal and the PMS Association Gold Medal in 1979 for obtaining the highest marks in MBBS.

In 1984, he was awarded the Babu Kanshi Ram Dhawan Gold Medal for being in the order of merit in M.S. (General Surgery) from the erstwhile King George Medical College in Lucknow.

His academic career has been very successful, and he is a winner of both of these medals. After receiving his Master of Clinical Urology degree from the PGIMER in Chandigarh.

He began working as a member of the faculty in the Department of Urology at the famed Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute in the year 1988.

Dr. Kapoor is considered one of the pioneers in the area of healthcare administration and management, and he has served on a subcommittee for the World Health Organization (1998).

Additionally, he has been awarded a number of prestigious international fellowships, such as the "JICA Fellowship in Urology" (Japan), the "Chakraborty Travelling Fellowship" from the Indo-American Urologic Association, and the "Endo-Urology Society Fellowship" in 1999. (USA).

Both the Fellowship of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in India (FAMS-2005) and the Fellowship of the National Academy of Sciences in Allahabad were awarded to him. Both of these honors are quite distinguished (FNASc – 2007).

The renowned Vigyan Gaurav Samman (2009), the Vigyan Ratna Samman (2010), the Yash Bharti Samman (2016), and the Dr. BC Roy National Award for Eminent Teacher have all been bestowed to Dr. Kapoor (2017).

He stepped down from his positions as Director of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute and Head of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplantation, both of which he had held voluntarily.

In those roles, he made significant contributions toward the institution's goal of achieving its mission of extending the advanced, high-tech, and multi-disciplinary healthcare services for which it is widely recognized.

Career Highlights

  • Since 2006, he has served as the Head of the Department of Urology, and during that time he has been crucial in establishing both the cadaveric transplant program and the renal transplant program in North India.
  • He pioneered a number of different laser technologies for use in urological procedures, such as the KTP laser for use in prostate surgery and the holmium laser for use in treating stone illnesses and prostate conditions.
  • In addition to this, he was crucial in the establishment of Paediatric Urology, Female Reconstructive Urology, as well as Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeries at SGPGIMS, which are the first of their type in North India.
  • More than 2700 kidney transplantations were performed at SGPGI while he was in charge, and 1200 laparoscopic donor nephrectomies were performed.
