About Doctor

Max hospitals in Delhi are home to the Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences (CLBS), where Sharat Varma serves as the chief of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and liver transplantation.

He has worked in Europe, the United States, and India for almost a decade, performing over a thousand liver transplants and treating children with complex gastrointestinal (GI), pancreatic, and hepatic illnesses.

CLBS's pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology program is among the largest in the country. It performs more than 250 liver transplants each year and has a long history of "firsts" in its field.

The unit's skill is so well-known that doctors from 16 other countries have been trained there.

Dr. Sharat earned his PhD in pediatric liver disease after working and training at top facilities in Europe, the United States, and India.

He has taken an interest in genetic liver illnesses and as a result, opened the first clinic of its kind in the country.

Wilson's disease, phosphofructokinase I deficiency, Alagille syndrome, cholesterol problems, mitochondrial diseases, and liver-related metabolic diseases are all areas in which he excels.

He is an integral part of many international groups studying childhood liver disorders.

Clinical research and product development with liver stem cells have been central to his education and work.

Dr. Sharat Varma was the first Indian physician to undertake FMT (Fecal microbiota transplantation) to treat a child with small gut syndrome and refractory D-lactic acidosis.

He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complicated gastrointestinal illnesses in children, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), food allergies, Celiac disease, and Crohn's disease.

Research is being conducted in many areas, including alternatives to liver transplantation for genetic liver illnesses, fecal transplantation (FMT), genetic diagnostics, reversal of cirrhosis, transplant immunology, and nutritional rehabilitation.
