About Doctor

Dr. Vikas Jain received his advanced training in urology and renal transplantation at Nadiad's renowned Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in Gujarat in 2009. He then went to Fundacio Puigvert in Barcelona (Spain) to learn more about kidney transplantation from deceased donors.

He has been in practice in Delhi for the past 14 years. Before joining the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Delhi, he was employed at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj. Dr. Jain is best known for starting kidney transplantation at ILBS after being approached to do so. 

He did so single-handedly, making it the only government hospital in Delhi to have a department of urology and kidney transplantation to this day. He spent six years lending his knowledge to the cause of getting the division back on track. Dr. Jain was then given the opportunity to direct and serve as a senior consultant for the renal transplant programs at both Narayana Health centers in the Delhi/National Capital Region. In his 14 years of practice, Dr. Jain has performed nearly 1100 successful kidney transplants.

In addition, he has performed countless urologic surgeries and founded or guided transplantation programs at nearly twenty-five medical facilities across eight states. 

His life's work has been spent passing on his expertise to others through training and teaching others to perform complex urological, laparoscopic, and transplant surgeries. Dr. Jain is on the editorial board of Indian J Urol. He also helped establish the United Network for Organ Sharing's kidney transplant community. He has written 32 books and articles.

Career Highlights

• Dr. Vikas Jain has been practicing urology for over 9 years.
•  He has performed over 500 renal transplants at ILBS, including four consecutive transplants in a single 24-hour period.
• The retrieval and transplantation of both kidneys from a 16-month-old brain-dead donor into an adult is the "first" and only case of its kind in India. He is also the first in Delhi/NCR to successfully transplant both kidneys from a non-heart-beating donor (NHBD) into two patients.
• The European Association of Urology (EUSP) has never before given this scholarship to an Indian.
• His academic achievements have been widely recognized. The most prestigious of these awards is the 2010 Best Paper Award given by Prof. CKP Menon of the Department of Urology at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
• He belongs to several prestigious medical organizations, including the American Urological Association, the European Association of Urology, the Urological Society of India, the Delhi Urological Society, the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation, the American Society of Transplantation, and the Société Internationale d'Urologie.

Awards and Recoginition

• In 2010, he was given the Prof. C. K. P. Menon Best Paper Award.
• He received the highest grade in Biochemistry in the country between February 1996 and March 1996, earning him an award from the All India Conference of ACBI in Manipal.
• He placed first in the multiple-choice exam given at the USI-AUA Instructional Course-Mock Examination and Annual Review Course, held in Mumbai on September 28 and 30, 2009.
• A second-place finisher Winner of the Vijayawada Prize for Best Poster at the 2010 USICON for work on regenerating donor gonads to lengthen renal vessels that were severed during a living donor transplant.
• The All India Conference of ACBI, Manipal bestowed upon him an award for having the highest aggregate score in Biochemistry during the period of February–March 1996.
