Surgical Technique Used in Fistula Surgery

Picture a key that ends the pain and trouble of fistulas and in medical advances, fistula surgery shines. It offers new ways to bring back comfort and health.

Fistulas come in many types, most of which are removable through surgery.

The surgery and recovery time depend on the type, however, success rates are high, and most fully recover.

Here we have mentioned all the necessary details about fistula surgery and the techniques that are used in this, so read this article till the end.

What is Fistula Surgery?

A fistula is an unusual tube joining two organs or vessels in the body. It typically forms from infection, inflammation, or surgery.

Fistulas can occur in various body areas and the most common types are:

  • Anal or perianal fistulas
  • Urinary tract fistulas
  • Gastrointestinal fistulas
  • Aortoenteric fistulas

Surgical Technique Used in Fistula Surgery

1. Fistulotomy

A fistulotomy is a surgery for treating an anal fistula. This condition is a small tunnel between the skin and the anus and can occur due to injuries, severe inflammation, infections, or pus collection.

2. Fistulectomy

A fistulectomy is a surgery to fix a fistula, an abnormal link between organs like intestines and blood vessels. It's often used for anal fistulas which form between the skin near the anus and the bowel end.

3. Fibrin Glue or Collagen Plug

Sometimes, instead of surgery, we close fistulas by sealing them. First, we drain the fistula. Then, we stitch the inner opening. Finally, we close the outer part with either plasma protein glue or a collagen plug.

4. Endorectal Advancement Flap

This procedure creates a small tissue flap in the anus and lower rectum. Then, it covers the fistula track's internal opening in the anus and sutures it in place. Additionally, a fistula plug or paste might be used.

Conclusion

Fistula surgery uses specific techniques based on the fistula type and patient's health and common options are fistulotomy, fistulectomy, etc.

These aim to heal with limited issues, such as incontinence or recurrence. Doctors tailor treatments to each patient. They focus on effectiveness and maintaining sphincter function to improve outcomes.
